Nearly 300 interns from around North America recently gathered at The Hub in Phoenix to present their summer projects, make personal connections and celebrate their Freeport experience.<\/p>\n
Held over the course of two days, the 2025 Intern Conference recognized the summer interns \u2013 either current college students or recent graduates \u2013 who worked in areas such as engineering, mine planning, finance and accounting, human resources and health and safety. Of the 2025 summer interns, 130 were selected to present to fellow interns, mentors and company leaders about their summer projects.<\/p>\n
To start the conference, Freeport President and Chief Executive Officer Kathleen Quirk welcomed the interns, speaking about a host of topics, including the company\u2019s deployment of autonomous haul trucks in Bagdad, the critical role of copper to the world\u2019s economy, her own career progression and the possibilities for those who have interned at the company.<\/p>\n

Miami\u2019s helicopter landing zone was the focus of recent coordination sessions with local emergency responders, underscoring its role as a vital access point during emergencies.
\nThe site\u2019s Emergency Response Team hosted crews from Tri-City Fire Department and Air Evac 7 for two sessions, each tailored to a different crew. The meetings covered key safety procedures and operational protocols needed to work effectively at the landing zone, which was built in 2023. Endangered fish in Upper Eagle Creek will be better protected from encroachment, and Freeport\u2019s nearby Morenci operation will be protected from future regulatory obligations under an agreement reached recently between the company and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.<\/p>\n
Under terms of the accord, Freeport will help finance a fish barrier \u2013 essentially a small dam \u2013 on Upper Eagle Creek, about 20 miles northwest of Morenci. The structure will help block invasive nonnative fish from swimming upstream into critical habitat for three endangered fish species \u2013 spikedace, loach minnow and Gila chub \u2013 and the threatened narrow-headed garter snake.
