Henderson Mine Honored for Reclamation Work <\/h2>\n
Henderson\u2019s recent dismantling and removal of an old mine shaft surface structure was recognized as one of Colorado\u2019s top reclamation achievements at the National Western Mining Conference, an annual event hosted by the Colorado Mining Association to honor outstanding contributions to environmental restoration in the mining industry. <\/p>\n
The Henderson team started the complex project in 2024 to remove three, 5,000-pound steel rings at a high-altitude, remote location. This process involved dismantling and airlifting the massive steel structures, utilizing a helicopter to transport the material over steep terrain. The upper 20 feet of the 1,600-foot-deep shaft was filled with a foam to eliminate potential risk to the public. Freeport\u2019s award came in the category of Overcoming Unique Challenges. Freeport Donation to help UTEP Restart Mining Engineering Program <\/h2>\n
A newly announced university partnership may help Freeport establish a pipeline of future mining engineers. <\/p>\n
In May, Freeport announced a donation of $7 million to the University of Texas at El Paso. Committed over a seven-year period, the money will support the university\u2019s planned restart of its mining engineering degree program. Freeport\u2019s contribution is part of a public-private partnership that also saw the Texas Board of Regents pledge $20 million. <\/p>\n
UTEP was founded in 1914 as a mining school, but as the copper market decreased so too did the demand for mining engineers, and the program ended in 1964. However, UTEP announced last year it intended to restart the program, addressing an expected industrywide shortfall. Freeport\u2019s Corporate Interns Connect Office Work with Mine Operations <\/h2>\n
Nearly 70 North America corporate interns recently visited the Sierrita mine for a firsthand look at Freeport\u2019s operations \u2013 an entirely new experience for many.<\/p>\n
The visit, coordinated by the Talent Acquisition team \u2013 with support from Sierrita Human Resources \u2013 as part of its Intern Extravaganza, included a tour of the site, a view into the Sierrita pit and a close-up look at a haul truck. As with any site visit, safety was the top priority.
