Trevor Nash, Environmental Scientist I, was one of the early adopters of the program, volunteering to be a driver for a vanpool that makes a stop in Florence Junction to pick up riders for a morning run to Miami.<\/p>\n

Eger, Human Resources Assistant II-Climax, lives on the other side of a mountain pass, which can be treacherous during the snowy season, which is typically most of the year. Because of the company provided vanpool, she shares the ride with five or six people who live nearby. She\u2019s fine pitching in on the driving when the roads are clear. But when the snow is heavy, she defers to those more confident in the harsh conditions.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt has saved me because I get severe anxiety with the winter driving,\u201d Eger said. \u201cNow I am just a passenger princess and don\u2019t even have to worry about it. I really enjoy being able to know every day that I have a ride instead of having to find one on days that it snows. It\u2019s been honestly wonderful.\u201d<\/p>\n

Peace of mind is just one of the benefits. Employees who participate in Freeport\u2019s rideshare program save, on average, about $13,000 per year in transportation costs, including wear and tear on their personal vehicles, according to company estimates.<\/p>\n
The company started subsidized employee vanpools in 2023 in Morenci and Miami to aid recruitment and retention. The program, now called FCX Commutes, was so popular that it soon expanded to Bagdad, then last fall to Climax and Henderson. Chino and Tyrone launched their vanpools in April, and Safford is exploring demand among its workers.
There were 12 vanpools and 62 riders when the program began as part of a pilot project in Morenci. Now there are almost 200 active vanpools and more than 925 riders.<\/p>\n
Working with the Enterprise car rental company, Freeport pays the cost of renting the vehicle, which includes maintenance. Riders do their own driving and only pay for fuel.<\/p>\n
A single employee can enroll and Enterprise will connect them with other riders to form a vanpool. Riders will be matched based on their work schedules and the locations of both their homes and worksites.<\/p>\n

Freeport recently was recognized by Enterprise as having one of the most successful rideshare programs in the country with its Commute Milestone Vanpool Program Award. The recognition was sent to Chase Parker, Manager- GSC Category Management, who helps run the program.<\/p>\n

Ricardo Santoyo, Senior Supervisor-Maintenance at Miami, was one of the first to organize a vanpool in Miami, which brings workers from eastern Maricopa County to the site. Miami now has eight active vanpools and 55 riders.<\/p>\n

Convenience, expanding options and cost savings have made FCX Commutes a success for both the employee and the company. Safford remains the most popular pickup site, there are now employee vanpools originating in Duncan, Bylas on the San Carlos Indian Reservation, and even Lordsburg and other towns in New Mexico.<\/p>\n
Morenci is a company-owned community with about 1,900 company sponsored houses, not nearly enough for all workers. Employees without company housing have few options when it comes to finding available homes. They typically commute from Safford or other communities an hour\u2019s drive or more away.<\/p>\n
