Freeport was selected as a Most Honored Company by Institutional Investor, a magazine and website that covers the global investment industry. The company finished first in seven of the eight categories in the metals and mining sector. The company\u2019s board of directors was selected as the best company board in the category.<\/p>\n
Also in the mining sector, Richard Adkerson, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, was named best CEO; Maree Robertson, Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, was ranked as the top CFO; and David Joint, Vice President, Investor Relations, was first in the IR Professional category.<\/p>\n

The rankings are based on a system developed by Fortune in partnership with Diligent, a corporate governance software company. The rankings factor expertise and independence of board members; diversity of the board, including gender, age and nationality; the tenure of independent directors; financial performance; and vulnerability to activism.<\/p>\n
Scores for each of the criteria were developed using corporate governance data aggregated from company reports and public findings. The rankings also factor environmental, social and governance scoring to evaluate whether boards had the \u201cforward-leaning mentality needed to thrive in a rapidly changing business climate.\u201d<\/p>\n

Union Pacific Railroad honored Freeport with the railroad\u2019s first Sustainability Partner Award, which acknowledges innovative business practices that reduce environmental impact and effective engagement and collaboration with key stakeholders, including communities and business partners.
Freeport was one of 12 companies honored at a ceremony held at Union Pacific Center in Omaha, Nebraska, in November.<\/p>\n

Freeport-McMoRan\u2019s work to help ensure the continuous flow of the Verde River in central Arizona was recognized with the Arizona Mining Association\u2019s highest honor.<\/p>\n
In 2022, the company completed removal of a water diversion dam originally built to support a long-closed smelter near the town of Clarkdale. This work, which enabled the river in that area to flow freely for the first time in more than a century, recently earned Freeport the AMA\u2019s Sustainability, Preservation and Diversity in the Environment Award for reclamation.<\/p>\n
The AMA sponsors the SPADE Award to recognize the member efforts to protect and enhance the biodiversity of Arizona. The award focuses on site actions that help preserve, reclaim or restore habitats and species.<\/p>\n

In October, Richard Adkerson, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, was inducted into the National Mining Hall of Fame in recognition of his contributions to the global mining industry.<\/p>\n
Adkerson is a long-standing member and past chair of the International Council on Mining and Metals, where he has championed initiatives to strengthen environmental and social performance in the mining industry. He is the only person to have served two full terms as Chairman of ICMM.<\/p>\n
\u201cRichard is an outstanding, inspirational and visionary leader,\u201d Kathleen Quirk, President, wrote in her letter supporting Adkerson\u2019s nomination. \u201cHe inspires our people to reach their full potential and has built a culture of competence, comradery, accountability, inclusiveness, innovation and teamwork.\u201d<\/p>\n
Adkerson was the chief architect of the $26 billion \u201cdream come true\u201d purchase of Phelps Dodge Corp. in 2007, at the time the largest mining acquisition in history, which created the modern Freeport.<\/p>\n
Commenting on Adkerson\u2019s induction, former Board member, business partner and personal friend, the late Dr. Henry Kissinger, said, \u201cRichard is a preeminent candidate for the National Mining Hall of Fame. He has an extraordinary combination of knowledge about the mining industry, together with its relevance to our national purpose.\u201d<\/p>\n

Freeport-McMoRan was named one of the 100 Best Corporate Citizens in the U.S. in annual rankings of the environmental, social and governance practices of the nation\u2019s 1,000 largest publicly traded companies.<\/p>\n
Freeport finished 87th out of the top 100 companies overall. It ranked 14th in the minerals industry category, which had the most companies represented in the rankings. This is the 11th time the company has made the list since 2007.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur inclusion on the Best Corporate Citizens list for the 11th time overall, and the second year in a row, is a testament to the commitment of Freeport and its employees to safe and responsible production of copper and molybdenum, which are critical to a vast range of products used by consumers, manufacturers and energy providers\u201d said Bill Cobb, Vice President and Chief Sustainability Officer.<\/p>\n
The rankings are compiled annually by 3BL Media in partnership with Institutional Shareholder Services as a way to assess the performance of the nation\u2019s largest publicly traded companies on ESG transparency and performance.<\/p>\n

Freeport-McMoRan\u2019s work to manage habitats, protect species and promote conservation education earned it top honors in the Wildlife Habitat Council Awards in July.<\/p>\n
The company received the WHC\u2019s 2023 Corporate Conservation Leadership Award, presented annually to a single company to recognize its achievement in conservation efforts. The award \u201csignifies an exemplary level of corporate commitment to biodiversity and conservation education and meaningful alignments with global conservation objectives,\u201d according to the organization\u2019s website.<\/p>\n
In addition to the companywide honor, three Freeport sites received individual awards for their local projects to protect vulnerable species and their habitats.<\/p>\n

Freeport-McMoRan was included in the S&P Global Sustainability Yearbook for the second year in a row in recognition of its demonstrated strength and performance on environmental, social and governance matters.<\/p>\n
Freeport was ranked in the 97th percentile among the more than 200 companies assessed from the Metals and Mining industry. To be included as a Sustainability Yearbook Member, a company must achieve a score within the top 15 percent of its industry and within 30 percent of that industry\u2019s top performer.<\/p>\n

Freeport-McMoRan was named one of America\u2019s Most JUST Companies in annual rankings from JUST Capital based on what the public views as the most important business behaviors.<\/p>\n
The company ranked first overall in the Basic Resources category and first among companies in that industry when it comes to its treatment of workers.<\/p>\n
Overall, Freeport ranked 64 out of the 951 largest publicly traded companies in the United States included on the 2023 list. This is the fourth time Freeport has been included in the top 100 businesses on the JUST 100 list since it was launched in 2017. The rankings are compiled by JUST Capital based on surveys of Americans to determine what they consider the top priorities for good business behavior.<\/p>\n
How a company treats its workers tops the criteria list again this year. The surveys show that wages and jobs are the two most important business issues today. That is consistent across every demographic group surveyed, whether it be by race, gender, age, income or political affiliation, according to the JUST Capital announcement.<\/p>\n
Freeport followed its 2023 performance by being named to the America\u2019s Most JUST Companies list at the beginning of this year.<\/p>\n
